Many people ask me how to build a mud truck and the answers vary. I asked some of my friends and they said between $3,000 and $30,000. We do not include labor hours in these quotes as labor costs vary extensively depending on where you live.

You can buy a turnkey mudder for $40,000 or less if you shop around. If you're very skilled and have plenty of time, $3,000 is possible, but it takes blood, sweat, and tears.

The first thing to consider is the used truck market, which seems to have a truck for sale at any price. Ford's F-250, Chevy's Silverado 2500HD and Dodge / Ram 2500 are standard equipment. They have big healthy motors that have incredible torque down low where it counts.

It all depends how far you want to go. Do you want to build an everyday runner for work with the occasional amateur mud racing, or do you want to do it all and race with the Mega Trucks?

The price depends on your ultimate goal at the finish line. If this is your first time installing, look for something that requires little investment in parts beyond normal maintenance. This way, you won't end up with a costly pile of metal that needs to be torn apart when you want to make major changes.
